PahlConsulting, in partnership with the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning (IGOT), has developed a study entitled “Analysis of the Susceptibility of Rural Fire in Mainland Portugal”.
The challenge proposed by the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests (ICNF) reflects the strong concern arising from the high incidence of rural and forest wildfires in Portugal, which has resulted in the destruction of thousands of hectares of forests as well as the loss of many human lives.
The work developed is assumed to be a differentiated contribution towards reversing the current situation, with the goal of obtaining wildfire risk modelling, production and publication of structured, quality cartographic rural wildfire hazard, backed-up in mathematical models, capable of responding to immediate challenges as well as strategic planning for forest defence against fires in the medium and long term.
The proposal now presented, therefore, results in the creation of a new methodology, duly documented and which allows an autonomous application by the ICNF.
